Here’s to a New Show Season

blog2

I’ve wanted to be able to share my and my pony’s horse show adventures for quite some time now, so many of my friends and family miss out on hearing how we do and they constantly remind me of this. A blog seemed like the perfect idea, but I just never could think of a way to start it. With the beginning of the new 2009 show season starting soon, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity. I am making this blog mainly to keep my friends and family updated on what my pony and I are up to, but I’d be happy to hear that anyone else on the web is sharing in on our show experiences. I hope you all enjoy reading!

I guess the proper thing to do first is to introduce myself, for anyone who doesn’t know me. My name is Elizabeth and I’m currently 17-years-old. I’m rather petite, which is part of the reason I still ride a pony. The other part would be that he’s the best teacher in the world. I’ve learned more things from him than any other horse or pony I’ve ridden in the past. As of April 2009 I’ll have been riding for 7 years, though I’ve only been learning to jump and show for the past 3 years. I wish there was a less cliche way of saying this; but I’m 100% horse crazy! I couldn’t imagine what I’d be like if I hadn’t grown up riding, and can’t imagine ever being able to stop loving horses. That being said, I’m also 100% poor. My family isn’t wealthy; I’m guessing I’m probably one of the very few people who compete in hunter/jumper shows and who also lives in a mobile home. However, I love my life! It would be amazing to have plenty of money and the funds to go to shows every week, but that just wouldn’t be my life.

Now for the best part, allow me to introduce you to my pony; Just Morgan, aka Morgan. He’s a 15-year-old medium, rabicano roan pony. I’m not sure exactly what breed he is, and for that matter no one else seems to know either, but I’d personally much rather have a pony that’s forgiving and kind than one with awesome bloodlines. Which reminds me, Morgan isn’t actually my pony, I half-lease him from the stable I take lessons from. Morgan and I have been a team since October of 2007, and I hope we can remain as such for as long as possible.

We’ve had a rather difficult show season in 2008. We had our ups and we definitely had our fair shares of downs, while we might not have placed in the top three regularly, or gotten high point at the end of the year, we learned more than I thought possible. Not just about what getting a bad distance or cross cantering into a fence can do to the rest of a trip, but I also learned a lot about the type of person I am, and the type of pony Morgan can be. We proved we could take on the large, expensive horses in a hunter flat, that Morgan can be an amazing mover when encouraged. And that buckling under pressure, just once even, can throw you off course for a lot longer than you may think. So here’s to a new show season! Time to make new strides and not dwell on past mistakes, and to hoping we learn even more this year and have just as much fun!
